Crazy thing has now emerged. Boston University investigators have done an experiment that clearly would have fallen under the category of oversight by the P3CO process. Yet they never told our NIAID program people about it, nor was there any mention of these experiments in the grant that they cited in the pre print paper, nor was there any mention of this in the progress reports from the grant. What they did was swap an omicron spike on to a Wuhan matrix to determine the effect of the chimera on the function of the virus. As you might expect the people who have been attacking us for gain-of-function research are jumping all over this. We are putting out a statement indicating that we knew nothing of these experiments and they should have told us about them and put it through the P3CO process. Let us see how this plays out.
