E-mail from Ron Klain after I met with him and asked to speak with the POTUS: From: Klain, Ronald A. EOP/WHO <RK.COS@WHO.EOP.GOV> Sent: Wednesday, August 17, 2022 10:19 AM To: Fauci, Anthony (NIH/NIAID) [E] <afauci@niaid.nih.gov> Cc: Goepfert, Stephen M. EOP/WHO <Stephen.M.Goepfert@who.eop.gov> Subject: [EXTERNAL] RE: Thank you Tony, Sad for me, sad for America, but no one has earned it more. The President is anxious to speak with you today – he travelled to Delaware last night. I am copying Stephen Goepfert here, who is with the President in Wilmington, to arrange the timing for your call. Ron I just had a wonderful conversation with President Biden. He called me up (started the conversation with “Hi, Joe here….”) and told me how much he admired me and how much of a pleasure it was to work very closely with me over the past year and three quarters. He told me that he wanted to guarantee that I would have as much protection as I need for as long as I need it. I told him how much I enjoyed working with him and that I was actually thinking of leaving government at the end of the last administration. However, when he became president and offered me the job as his chief medical advisor it was a job that I absolutely could not refuse. I also told him that working with him over the last two years was the capstone of my career. He was quite moved by that and seemed to be very pleased with hearing that.
